Bio: Ellen has been an activist for most of her life Since moving to San Diego over 22 years ago, she has organized regular protests at SeaWorld, the Del Mar race track, rodeos and any other place where animals are being exploited. She has organized some of the largest protests at the now-closed Farmer John’s slaughterhouse in Los Angles and has lectured at universities and grade schools in San Diego about animal rights and the environmental impact of eating animals. She is certified in plant-based nutrition and loves teaching people the benefits of a vegan diet.

Bio: Emily is President of Open Barn, an animal sanctuary situated on 8 acres in Ramona, CA with a mission to provide forever homes to rescued farm animals and share their stories as examples of why we advocate a plant-based and compassionate lifestyle. Emily works a full-time job in engineering management on top of her role at the sanctuary and is grateful to work alongside the volunteers and nonprofit board members who drive Open Barn’s mission forward.

This session will focus on how environmental and animal rights topics were presented in Fright for Future’s haunted maze of true terror.

Bio: Jaidacyn is an environmental and animal rights advocate and the creator of Fright for Future, a Halloween-themed maze of true terror with a focus on scary issues such as climate change, pollution and deforestation. She works as the Marketing and Fundraising Coordinator for SanDiego350 and is passionate about educating others on environmental and animal rights topics. She also gives talks on climate change to high school classes and wrote and illustrated a children’s book called Why is Earth Sick?.

From plastic to pizza, Liz will share strategies for how we can all be more conscious event planners and goers to keep waste out of our local landfills.

Bio: Liz is the chef and owner of Santosha Nutrition, a plant-based, zero-waste culinary business focusing on farm-to-table experiences and education. In 2021, Liz founded Sustainability is Sexy, a nonprofit focused on driving innovation within the San Diego community through connection and providing tangible education and solutions to the global climate crisis. Liz also works for Solana Center for Environmental Innovation as an environmental solutions lead, working with businesses and the community during the organic recycling rollouts throughout San Diego County.

Bio: Founded in 2019, Libby Lou’s Safe Haven is a microsanctuary and was established to provide permanent refuge and kindness for cows and friends. Our Safe Haven helps end suffering for those who have been abused or neglected, have special needs, uncertain futures or have been otherwise letdown by humans. We also offer humane education and invite conversations about compassion.

Home to five significant wildlife migration corridors that connect to places like the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone, SUWA works to prevent fragmentation of these stunning and fragile landscapes by keeping fossil fuels in the ground, addressing rampant off-road vehicle (ORV) use, and seeking protection through federal legislation. These lands also store over 247 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in their natural state and include the parts of headwaters of the Colorado River, which supply over 40 million people (including those in California) with water.

Bio: Reed Ochalek, serves as the California Outreach Intern with Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA) to build grassroots support for protecting the largest network of intact wildlands in the lower 48 states. Reed is soon to graduate University of California, Santa Barbara, where he studies Economics and Environmental Studies to prepare for law school. On many weekends, he can be found guiding outdoor adventure trips or climbing.
